Tanja Ostojić: Transformative Encounters

Berlin-based performance and interdisciplinary artist, researcher and educator, Tanja Ostojić is internationally renowned as a pioneer of institutional gendered critique and for her work in the field of socially and politically engaged and public art. Since 1994, she has been developing research-oriented, performative art projects that deal with issues of gender politics, feminism, migration, displacement, labour and ethical participation. Her works have been shown at Brooklyn Museum in New York, La Biennale di Venezia, at Busan Biennale in South Korea, among others.
An artist talk will focus on sharing of feminist methodologies in some of the Ostojić's recent collaborative artistic projects Lexicon of Tanjas Ostojić (2011–17) and Mis(s)placed Women? (2009–22), in which community building practices and collective artistic practice have been developed.

In 2018, she published the Lexicon of Tanjas Ostojić, a book based on transformative encounters derived from a women communal project, from the region of former Yugoslavia. The project included 33 participating women from different backgrounds and generations, all named Tanja Ostojić. It was created through a collective artistic and autobiographical research practice by the 33 name-sisters, including art education, co-creation of collaborative artworks through workshops, an exhibition format, performances and a series of public programs.

More recently, Ostojić has developed the project Mis(s)placed Women?, consisting of performances and workshops, which involved over 180 participants globally, mostly convened through open calls. The project interrogated the historical displacement and vulnerability that continue to affect women in communities of different generations and regions, also raising awareness about gender-based violence in the public spaces and the transformative potential of self-organized politics of visibility.
